Members of SFI, AIDWA, DYFI staged protest in Rameswaram here on Tuesday demanding stringent punishment against the man who murdered a class XII girl in Rameswaram recently.
Arockiya Nirmala, AIDWA, District Secretary, who led the protest, said, the accused should be given immediate and strict punishment under the existing Indian law.
“The guy who had the guts to murder the minor girl in broad daylight could anytime be a harm to society and could also encourage other youths in the area,” she added.
So, the action taken against him should be a warning message to the other people who have the intention of even trying out such a horrific activity, she stated.
Apart from the reactionary measures, the district police should also improve the police patrolling in the area and increase CCTVs in Rameswaram, Ms. Nirmala noted.
Though police claimed to have increased their police strength in the island, illicit sale of liquor in Rameswaram, where liquor sale is banned, has increased multiple times, he said.
“The perpetrators sneaking in the liquor into the Rameswaram area run it as a cottage industry with the implicit support of police,” she added.
Recalling an event when she was contacted by people running an illicit liquor business hours after she submitted a petition with the police head of the district, Ms. Nirmala, alleged, that was how the nexus was between the police and the criminals.
“Unless the ban of usage of narcotics, drugs and alcohol is strictly implemented in Rameswaram, such crimes cannot be controlled,” she added.
Further, the protesters demanded compensation of Rs.25 lakh for the affected family from the government.
