Thoothukudi Q branch police on Thursday seized 59 bundles of beedi leaves weighing around 2,000 kg, which were allegedly being prepared for smuggling from Thoothukudi to Sri Lanka.
Acting on a tip off received by Inspector Viajaya Anitha, that beedi leaves were being transported near a godown in Jothinagar area under the SIPCOT police jurisdiction in Thoothukudi, a team led by sub inspector Ramachandran conducted a raid in the area in the early hours of Thursday. Upon spotting the police, the accused dropped the loaded bundles from the pick-up truck and fled the spot.
During the operation, police seized all 59 bundles of beedi leaves. For further action, the seized goods were handed over to the customs department.
