The police have detained right-wing activist and television commentator Rahul Easwar on the charge of defaming and disclosing the identity of the alleged survivor who had accused Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkootathil of rape and coerced termination of pregnancy.
A cyber police team called on Mr. Easwar’s house and asked him to report to the Armed Reserve Camp at Nandavanam in Thiruvananthapuram. It has requested Mr. Easwar to turn in his computer and mobile phone for cyber forensic examination.
Earlier, the Thiruvananthapuram Cyber Police had registered an FIR based on the woman’s complaint. She accused Mr. Easwar and KPCC general secretary Sandeep Varier of repeatedly defaming her and questioning her integrity in social and conventional media. The complainant said the vicious attacks and character assassination, including hinting at her identity, caused her severe trauma.
The FIR names Deepa Joseph, the Mahila Congress district secretary for Pathanamthitta, as an accused.
