Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K. Selvaperunthagai, who led a protest in Chennai on Tuesday against the Special Intensive Revision of the electoral rolls, said the Vote Chori campaign, led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, would resonate with voters not only in States where Mr. Gandhi had flagged major issues but also in Tamil Nadu which is going to the polls next year.

Speaking to The Hindu, he said the SIR in Tamil Nadu had opened a debate among members of the public on why such an exercise was being carried out by the Election Commission of India.

War rooms in districts

“Now, there is awareness. Today, people are talking about SIR. We are conducting training programmes across Tamil Nadu on how to fill up [enumeration] forms and how to use the QR code. People in rural areas may find it difficult. We have established war rooms in districts. Tomorrow, I will visit war rooms in Srivaikuntam and the one set up by MLA Ruby Manoharan in Nanguneri,” he said.

Mr. Selvaperunthagai said people understood the need for remaining vigilant. “All want to safeguard their right to vote. Eligible voters should be able to vote, while ineligible voters should not be allowed to vote.”

He added that Mr. Gandhi’s revelations would also help the INDIA bloc in Tamil Nadu.
