Biotechnology students of Rajalakshmi Engineering College (REC), Chennai, have won awards at the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM), 2025 held in Paris.

It is an international competition organised for students to use synthetic biology to tackle real world problems. The iGEM witnessed the participation of 421 teams from 40 countries. The REC students have won the gold medal and Best Project Award in the Food and Nutrition category.

The team’s winning project titled “SaltEnPep” is a synthetic biology approach towards recombinant expression of saltiness enhancing peptides. It enhances peptides that amplify the salty taste without adding more sodium. This allows food manufacturers to reduce sodium without losing flavour.

Thangam Meganathan, Chairperson and Abhay Meganathan, Vice Chairman, Rajalakshmi Institutions congratulated the team.
