Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) has acquired an MRI machine at a cost of ₹12 crore and a fully automated peripheral vascular diagnostic system for ₹35.95 lakh.

Health Minister Ma. Subramanian on Wednesday said thousands of people from Chennai, other districts of Tamil Nadu, and neighbouring States were seeking medical care at RGGGH every day, raising the need for advanced equipment. The newly installed MRI machine will cater to 40 persons a day.

The fully automated peripheral vascular diagnostic system will help in the early identification of diabetes-related vascular complications, facilitating immediate treatment and surgery, thereby preventing amputations, he said.

After a 100-year-old building was damaged in a fire three years ago at the RGGGH, the State government announced the construction of a new building at a cost of ₹65 crore. Spread across 1,12,247 sq. ft, the building has four floors and will house the Department of Neurology. “Construction has been completed. Work to install equipment is in the final stages, and will be completed within 10 days. The Chief Minister will inaugurate the building,” he said.

Responding to a question, the Minister said any complaint relating to private hospitals refusing treatments under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS) could be reported to the State’s health helpline at 104. Action would be taken against the non-compliant hospital, he said.

On the occasion, the Minister met 10 patients who underwent corrective surgeries for spinal deformities under CMCHIS at the RGGGH. In line with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, he handed over artificial limbs and tricycles to persons with disabilities.

Health Secretary P. Senthilkumar, Project Director for the Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project S. Vineeth, Director of Medical Education and Research R. Suganthy Rajakumari, and dean of RGGGH K. Shantharam were present.
