Farmers in Ramanathapuram district during the farmers’ grievance redress meeting on Friday complained about the delay in provisioning of crop loans.

Tamil Nadu Farmers’ Association District President Muthuramu, stated that the provision of crop loans in cooperative credit societies were being delayed.

“Only a very small amount of crop loan has been disbursed this year so far. Therefore, we have requested that crop loans be disbursed quickly to all farmers,” he added

Relief and compensation for paddy and chili crops affected by rain and floods last year have not been provided even after one year, he noted.

Mr. Muthuramu said, crops in farmlands in Kamuthi, Mudukulathur, Kadaladi, and Paramakudi regions were destroyed by deer and wild boars. He requested the Forest Department to provide appropriate compensation for it.

The farmers also requested the Electricity Board to appropriate and immediate action to remove the electric wires hanging over agricultural lands which pose danger to both the crops, livestock and human lives.

“Real estate owners are buying farmlands, water bodies and leaving them fallow. This is affecting the agricultural lands. Therefore, the sale of land in water catchment areas should be banned and prevented,” farmers demanded.

Farmers complained about the scarce availability of fertiliser in most parts of the district.

They alleged that private fertiliser shops were selling fertilizers, including urea, at higher prices and cooperative primary agricultural credit societies were supplying fertilizer only to those farmers who took crop loans. They requested action be taken to supply fertilizer to all farmers through cooperatives.

District Collector Simranjeet Singh Kahlon assured that action would be taken to ensure the availability of fertilizer and crop loans. He also ordered the Electricity Board to fix the electric wires and directed the Forest Department to assess the damage and provide compensation to the farmers without causing them any undue trouble.

He informed the farmers about the Indian Meteorological Department’s forecast for heavy rains in the district on November 23 and 24. “If it does not rain, Public Works Department must release water from the Vaigai in the following week,” he urged.
