Centuries by Arpit Rana (170 n.o., 275b, 17×4, 2×6) and Sanat Sangwan (122 n.o., 213b, 9×4) in an undefeated opening partnership of 321 was the silver lining for Delhi as its Elite Group-D Ranji Trophy encounter against Pondicherry ended in a draw on Tuesday.

Having conceded a first-innings lead of 187 on day three at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, the host added just one point to its tally while the southern outfit came away with three points.

On a flat pitch that had negligible assistance for the bowlers even on the fourth and final day, Arpit and Sangwan made merry. With Yash Dhull’s side reaching 321 for no loss in its second innings, ahead by 134 runs, the curtains came down on the contest at the scheduled tea interval.

Resuming with Delhi’s score reading 76 without loss, the left-handed pair did not allow the Pondicherry attack to sniff an opening. While Sangwan built on his prolific start to the campaign with his second three-figure score of the season, the 21-year-old Arpit notched up his maiden century in his seventh First Class appearance.

Arpit has impressed as a T20 batter in the Delhi Premier League since its launch last year. But he had scored just one half-century in 10 Ranji innings before this match, and was dismissed for a duck in the first essay. By capitalising on the run-scoring opportunity on Tuesday, however, he has done himself no harm.

“I am very happy that I have scored my first hundred in First Class cricket. I will look to keep making such scores for Delhi going forward and bat with the same focus,” Arpit, who trains at the Bal Bhavan academy in Dwarka, said. “I did not have any pressure. I just wanted to play the way I have in the age-group levels.”
