Mayor Jegan Periyasamy on Friday said that the recent rainfall in Thoothukudi haD caused no major inconvenience to the public.

He made this statement during the Thoothukudi Corporation’s council meeting, which he chaired on Friday.

In his address, Mr. Periyasamy said, “ Thoothukudi recently received heavy rainfall for three days. However, the rainwater drained within an hour, preventing inconvenience to the public. There is no water stagnation in any of the 60 wards.”

He added that due to the vacant plots in wards 2, 16 and 17, minor stagnation was reported on those sites and the owners of those sites had been instructed to fill them with earth to prevent future stagnation.

“To prevent mosquito breeding and health issues due to stagnant water, the Corporation has sprayed disinfectants and taken preventive measures. Additional motor pumps are being installed in areas where water has stagnated, to ensure complete drainage and prevent similar issues during the next spell of rain,” he said.

Mr. Periyasamy observed that to ensure that rainwater drains into the sea without stagnation, 14 drainage pathways have been created across the city. “Since no rainfall has been predicted for the next 10 days, the corporation is utilising the period to carry out patchwork and repair damaged roads,” he noted.

Following his address, 12 resolutions were read and unanimously approved by the council.

At the meeting the council members also discussed various issues in their respective wads which included, proper maintenance of old parks, repair of non-functioning street lights, steps to ensure proper flow of water through Puckle canal and expediting the repair of damaged roads.

Responding to the concerns, Mr. Periysamy said that the Puckle canal will be widened and work will commence in January. Once completed, rainwater will properly flow through it. Measures will also be taken to restore old parks and a proposal has been submitted for the installation of 1,188 new streetlights, he added.

Corporation Commissioner S. Priyanka, Deputy Mayor S. Jenitta and other officials were present at the meeting.
