The Delhi Fire Services (DFS) on Monday urged authorities to regulate the manufacture, sale and use of pyro guns in the wake of the December 6 tragedy at the Goa club, which was linked to sparks from such devices used to shower “cool” fireworks. A Delhi-based family of four was among the victims.
Stressing the significance of strict regulation, DFS chief A.K. Malik said, “The DFS has no specific instructions on the use of pyro guns in the Delhi Fire Services Act and Rules. However, accidents can happen in various ways, including pyro guns. There is a need for regulation of their sale, use and manufacture.”
The DFS has advised establishments to minimise the use of inflammable materials. “There are criteria that event organisers must follow, failing which the certificate is withdrawn. The use of pyro guns is subject to the same precautions and must be restricted to a controlled environment,” an official said.
The owner of a food joint, whose store was gutted in a blaze three years ago, said, “There is no way to prevent customers from using pyro guns because there are no guidelines from the DFS or the government. We can ensure the installation of fire safety equipment, but accidents can occur anytime.”
Warning by councillor
Meanwhile, senior councillor Mukesh Goyal highlighted widespread violations in the operation of open-terrace restaurants across the national capital, saying a Goa-like tragedy, which claimed 25 lives, could unfold in the city.
