Demanding compensation for the death of three members of a family in a road accident caused by police vehicle in Sivaganga on Tuesday night, relatives of the victims staged a protest outside Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) here on Wednesday. 

Prasad, 25, his wife Sathya, 20 and son Ashwin, 2, all died on the spot after their bike collided with a police jeep near Thirupuvanam in Sivaganga district.  

Their mortal remains were taken to GRH for post-mortem. In this situation, more than 50 people, relatives of the victims, staged a road blockade outside GRH demanding compensation and action against the police personnel who caused the accident.  

Nagarathinam, an advocate, said, they heard from the eyewitnesses that the police who drove the police jeep was drunk at the time.  

“When a common man commits a similar crime and tries to escape from the law, would they be allowed to walk free,” he added.  

It was not just an injury, but all the family members including a child has died in the accident, he said. “We would not call off the protest until convincing compensation is granted to us,” Mr. Nagarathinam stated.  

In addition to the immediate arrest and suspension of the police personnel, one member of the victims’ family should be given a government job, he demanded.  

Until then, he said, they would not receive the bodies from the hospital.  

Police sources, said, though Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has announced a solatium of ₹3 lakh for each of the victims, and ₹1 lakh for the injured woman, their demand for government job was being considered and the senior officials have taken it to the State government for further action.
