The Thiruvanmiyur bus terminus, which is the gateway to the ECR, and an important bus terminus in the city, is set for a major revamp after several years.

Belonging to the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC), the terminus, which is among the 35 bus termini in the city, from which more than 100 buses are operated to various parts of city, was in a dilapidated condition.

Now, the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) is executing redevelopment of the bus terminus on behalf of the MTC.

Once completed, it would have several passenger amenities such as waiting area, public convenience, shops and ample parking space. The main problem of flooding during rain would be overcome by the redevelopment project, MTC officials said.

A senior official of CMDA said following the successful redevelopment of the bus termini at Thiru. Vi. Ka. Nagar, Velachery, Mullai Nagar and the Ambattur Industrial Estate, the Thiruvanmiyur bus terminus is being redeveloped at a cost of ₹35.11 crore.

The terminus, which spans 1.66 acres, will have a built-up area of 6,000 sq.m with various amenities such as time office, ticket counters, a spacious waiting area, medical room, shops, separate passenger boarding and dropping zones and bus crew rest rooms. The terminus, attached to the depot, would be a three-storey building and will have a separate two-storey commercial blocks. It will have 13 bus bays  with each bus bay shed measuring 2,500 sq.m.  Nearly 70 buses can be parked and operated at one time.

Parking space

For commuters having private vehicles, the bus terminus would have dedicated parking space for cars and two-wheelers. The project, which started in July this year, is planned to be completed by April next year, CMDA officials said.

S. Sivasubramaniam, a resident of Thiruvanmiyur, said the bus terminus has become an important nerve centre for MTC, attracting thousands of commuters. But the bus terminus suffered from flooding even during light rainfall,  poor maintenance of public convenience and lack of parking spaces for private vehicles. The redevelopment work would ease the hardships faced by the commuters, he hoped.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin inaugurated the redeveloped Ambattur bus terminus, which was also developed by CMDA at a cost of ₹11.81 crore, on Monday.
