Residents and members of Hindu outfits protested in Salem on Sunday against the demolition of Kumaragiri Murugan Temple arch at Ammapet in Salem city.
The temple arch, which was constructed in 1990, was demolished as its height reduced when drainage channels and roads were developed. The Ammapet Palapattarai Mariamman temple authorities demolished the temple arch on Saturday night, reportedly without informing anyone. On Sunday morning, people found the arch demolished. The local residents and Hindu outfits gathered on the spot and protested. They also tried to stage a road roko. But the Ammapet police prevented them and held talks with them. They demanded action against people who demolished the temple arch.
The Mariamman temple authorities came to the spot and assured them that a new arch would be constructed and the protesters withdrew the demonstration.
