Residents in Cheran Maa Nagar and Vilankurichi have not received the desired response from the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, Coimbatore, to their demand for improving bus services to Gandhipuram, Singanallur and Town Hall.

Though several new residential localities have sprung up in these areas over the recent years, the TNSTC has not added bus services accordingly, the residents have complained, lamenting that bus services to key locations that were discontinued after the COVID lockdown phase have not been restored.

In a reply to queries posed under RTI (Right to Information) Act, the TNSTC, Coimbatore, has stated that the operation of the bus service 92 from Cheran Maa Nagar to Marudhamalai, and route 9 to Ukkadam Bus Stand was under consideration.

The TNSTC has mentioned in its reply about shortage of buses, and that the operation of services hinged on passenger patronage.

According to V. Balasubramani, a social activist, who had sought the reply from the TNSTC, Coimbatore, under RTI Act, with the presence of software companies in Vilankurichi and the rapid urbanisation of the stretch till Cheran Maa Nagar, the need for public bus services has grown multifold.

School and college students, office-goers and others are required to wait for at least 30 minutes for city buses, and were forced to depend on share autos.

There will be substantial passenger patronage if shuttle services are operated from Kovilpalayam and Saravanampatti to Hope College Stop via Vilankurichi and Cheran Maa Nagar, Mr. Balasubramani emphasised.
