A section of residents of Ambedkar Nagar in M. Duraisamypuram on Wednesday staged a demonstration in front of Vembakottai panchayat union office protesting against erratic drinking water supply.
Led by CPI(M) functionary Jeyaraj, the residents, especially women, squatted on the ground with empty pots to highlight their pathetic condition as they had to go without water for more than a week.
The residents complained that they had to buy water from private tankers. They had already staged protests twice in the last six months. The officials had then promised to set right the drinking water supply within two weeks. However, they did not keep up their promise.
The residents also complained that the blockage in sewer was not properly cleared. Besides, the officials had not heeded to their demand for a bridge in their locality.
As the residents and CPI(M) leaders, including B. Mariappan and K. Kannan, squatted at the entrance of the union office, union officials and police officials pacified the protesters. They assured them that the work to provide regular water supply would begin on Thursday following which the agitators dispersed.
