A section of residents has urged the Tiruchi Corporation to develop the 80-feet Road stretch as a designated vending zone, citing persistent encroachments that have rendered pedestrian spaces unusable and worsened traffic congestion.

Despite periodic encroachment drives, footpaths along the stretch continue to be occupied by commercial establishments, roadside eateries, and vehicles. Cars and two-wheelers are frequently parked on pavements meant for pedestrian movement, and additional parking along the road further narrows the carriageway.

Under the Smart Cities Mission, the Corporation launched a smart pedestrian platform project in 2020 to improve footpaths along major roads. As part of this initiative, the 80-Feet Road was upgraded with footpaths on both sides, an underground utility system, enhanced lighting, and a beautified centre median. The aim was to create a safe, walkable corridor while ensuring smoother traffic flow.

However, residents say the purpose of creating a pedestrian-friendly environment has been defeated, as most of the newly developed footpaths continue to be encroached upon by vendors, eateries, and parked vehicles.

Road users complain that unauthorised parking on both sides has reduced the available road width and triggered frequent traffic bottlenecks. “Due to encroachments and the presence of a centre median, the width of the road has shrunk considerably over the years, posing a safety threat to pedestrians and motorists,” said Roshan, a motorist.

Given the stretch’s width, residents have suggested that the Corporation formally designate it as a vending zone. “Street vending is essential for many livelihoods, but the current arrangement is chaotic. If the Corporation develops this road as an organised vending zone, it will help both vendors and residents,” said K. Sureshkumar, Councillor Ward 23.
