There is a growing demand for Coimbatore Corporation to complete restoration of Vilankurichi Road and nearby interior stretches at the earliest in Coimbatore city.
“The underground drainage work carried out by the Corporation has left many internal roads, such as those in Cheran Ma Nagar, Mahalakshmi Garden, Mounsamy Nagar, Jeeva Nagar, and Subramaniam Avenue, partially re-laid. These roads have been in poor condition for over two years, and every day we have to drive carefully to avoid accidents,” said Paul Vasanth, a resident of Mahalakshmi Garden.
Another resident, S. Sethu, said, “The centre portion of the road has been dug up by the Corporation and has not yet been re-laid. Many heavy vehicles use this road to access Avinashi Road, which is a major artery.”
Corporation officials said that all pipe-laying work in the internal roads has been completed. On the 1.3-kilometre stretch of Vilankurichi Road, where a new pipeline is being installed, work is being carried out in parts during the night to avoid traffic disruption. Only 180 metres of the pipeline remain to be laid. For stretches where pipe-laying is complete, concrete will be poured soon. The work, including an entirely new tar layer, is expected to be completed within a month.
Around 70% of the interior roads in Wards 22, 24, and 29 along Vilankurichi Road have already been completed. A separate proposal for the remaining work has been submitted, and sanction from the state government is awaited. Most of the main internal roads are complete, with only the branch lanes remaining, the officials added.
