M. Subramani, 62, a retired tahsildar, was murdered on a farmland at Thayanur on the outskirts of Tiruchi on Thursday.
The police said Subramani was watering his farmland when he was attacked by some persons with a spade, killing him on the spot.
Police suspect the involvement of a few persons of the same village. Sources said Subramani had taken on lease a portion of land belonging to the village temple and was carrying out farming. This had angered some persons in the village and was believed to be the cause behind the murder. The Somarasampet police are investigating.
