The Shyampet police under Warangal Police Commissionerate jurisdiction have busted a major paddy procurement scam involving a rice mill owner and his family members, with 13 people, including the main accused, arrested for their alleged involvement in the ₹2.10 crore fraud on Tuesday.
The police seized cash worth ₹9.50 lakh, a car worth ₹8 lakh, and two agricultural land documents worth ₹32 lakh, and froze ₹54 lakh in bank accounts.
According to East Zone DCP Ankit Kumar, Bejjanki Srinivas, owner of Sambasiva Mini Modern Rice Mill, Kamalapur, and his accomplices had registered fake crop details and obtained government funds illegally.
It is said that they presented 15 family members, relatives, and others as fake farmers and submitted false details that they had cultivated paddy on 314 acres of government land in Shayampet mandal and procured 9,100 quintals of paddy.
The police had earlier arrested seven other accused in the case, while two other accused out of a total of 22 accused are absconding. The arrested include two Agriculture Extension Officers (AEO) and in-charges of the IKP paddy procurement centres.
The accused, including Bejjanki Srinivas, were arrested for allegedly procuring paddy in the name of fake farmers during the Rabi season at the IKP paddy procurement centres in Shayampet and Katrapalli.
The police have registered a case against the accused under various sections of the BNS and IT Act, and the investigation is ongoing.
