Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) general secretary Premallatha Vijayakant on Sunday said that both, the ruling and opposition parties, cannot face elections without alliances.

The party founder, Vijayakant, had proved that the DMDK can stand alone and succeed, she added.

Addressing the media on the sidelines of the party’s booth-level committee meeting, she said power sharing and coalition governance would shape the future of the State, and a coalition government was likely after the 2026 Assembly election. “The DMDK will have a role in it,” she asserted. The party’s alliance position for the 2026 elections would be announced at the conference scheduled in Cuddalore on January 9.

Responding to questions about ties with the AIADMK, she said the party had not been betrayed. “We cannot form an alliance for the sake of one MP seat.”

On the law and order situation, she said it had become a major concern and attributed the rise in murders in the State to drug addiction, particularly ganja. The DMK had fulfilled 50% of its poll promises only because the DMDK was directly engaging with the public and raising the issues of unfulfilled promises. “It is the responsibility of the ruling party to address people’s grievances. It is too early to predict the election outcome, as the government has four months to fulfil its pending promises,” she said.
