Ahead of the Gram Panchayat elections next month, an overwhelming number of villagers of Jogugudem in Kamepalli mandal of Khammam district have reportedly decided to ensure an unanimous election of a candidate as their Sarpanch, after he ‘offered’ to spend ₹20 lakh for construction of a temple and development works.

According to unconfirmed reports, a resolution to this effect was unanimously passed at a meeting held in the village on Friday.

Around seven aspirants evinced interest for the Sarpanch post but one among them emerged as the unanimous choice of the participants of the meeting, as he offered to provide funds for the development of the village, sources added.

Social media was agog with reports terming it as “auctioning of the post”, a charge denied by the locals.

So far, no such incident has come to our notice, said an official, who is part of the designated team tasked to check violation of the model code of conduct for the GP elections.

“We will inquire into the matter and take appropriate steps to ensure free and fair elections,” he added.

The village is going to the polls in the second phase of GP elections next month and the filing of nominations is slated to begin on November 30.
