SC panel chief orders filing of quick FIRs on caste crimes

VIZIANAGARAM:

The Andhra Pradesh State Commission for Scheduled Castes chairman K. S. Jawahar, on Thursday directed the police department to file First Information Reports (FIRs) immediately when people approach the Station House Officers (SHO) with regards to atrocities against scheduled caste people.

He expressed concern over delays in filing cases on accused persons under the SC and the ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act-1989.

In a review meeting with Collector S. Ramsundar Reddy, Superintendent of Police A. R. Damodar and other officials in Vizianagaram he discussed the implementation of welfare schemes meant for scheduled castes.

Representatives of several Dalit organisations met him at the Zilla Parishad guest house and explained the grievances of the people.

Praja Sanghala Joint Action Committee (Civil Society Groups JAC) State president Akkivarapu Mohana Rao requested the Commission to study the socioeconomic conditions of scheduled castes people since a majority of them were living pathetic life in villages. He urged Mr.Jawahar to take initiative for the improvement of amenities in hostels meant for scheduled castes students. Mr. Mohana Rao requested the Commission chairperson to ensure skill development training programmes for youngsters of Dalit communities so that they get employment quickly in software companies and other industries.
