SC youth found murdered in Melur

A 26-year-old youth was found murdered in Melur near here on Sunday night.

Police sources said Manimaran, a Scheduled Caste youth, was a construction worker from Nondi Kovilpatti area in Melur region. He was found dead with injuries on his head near the registration office early in the morning.

Police sources said though the incident happened on Sunday night, due to the poor lighting in the area, the body was noticed by the public only in the early morning.

Madurai Superintendent of Police B.K. Arvind said preliminary inquiries suggested no caste angle to the murder. A few suspects had been secured and investigation was under way. A few more persons were likely to be arrested. A drunken brawl seemed to the reason for the murder, he added.

The police sent the body for a postmortem. An inspector said the report from the government hospital might give more leads in the murder case.
