The District School Education Department has transferred three teachers and issued show cause notices in connection with the death of a Class IX student from a government school in Valparai.

The action follows the suicide of a 14-year-old S. Muthusanjana, who died at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital on Wednesday night.

The student and her father had earlier alleged that she faced mental and physical harassment from three teachers — who handled Science, English and Tamil — which led her to take the extreme step. A video statement recorded before her death and later released by the family also contained allegations against the teachers.

Coimbatore District (Rural) police registered a case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and further investigation covering the allegations of the student and her father is under way.

Chief Education Officer R. Balamurali said that disciplinary proceedings under Section 17(b) have been initiated, the notices were issued on Saturday (November 22, 2025), and explanation has been sought from the teachers within 15 days. After receiving their replies, the enquiry officer will proceed as per procedure.

He said schools have Students Advisory Committees and students are encouraged to raise complaints. He added that students are being continuously counselled to ensure that issues are addressed before they escalate. Awareness programmes are being conducted for parents and the 14417 helpline is available for students to report issues 24/7.

(Assistance for overcoming suicidal thoughts is available on the State’s health helpline 104, Tele-MANAS 14416. and Sneha’s suicide prevention helpline 044-24640050).
