The scrutiny of nomination papers submitted for the upcoming local body elections in Pathanamthitta district was completed on Saturday.
The verification of nomination for the district panchayat was held under the leadership of District Election Officer and District Collector S. Prem Krishnan, while those to the municipal councils, block panchayats, and grama panchayats were scrutinised by their respective returning officers.
For the district panchayat, 124 nomination papers were received across 17 divisions. Of these, 14 were rejected, and 110 were declared valid. Following detailed verification, 58 candidates were found eligible to contest the elections. Among 66 candidates who had submitted nomination papers, eight were rejected.
Across the four municipal councils, 485 candidates qualified to contest the elections after scrutiny. The figures for each council are: Adoor 94, Pathanamthitta 118, Thiruvalla 147, and Pandalam 126. One nomination each was rejected in the Pathanamthitta and Pandalam municipalities.
In the eight block panchayats of the district, 397 candidates were declared eligible to contest. The distribution of qualified candidates is: Mallappally 47, Pulikeezhu 43, Koipuram 50, Elanthoor 50, Ranni 50, Konni 49, Pandalam 55, and Parakode 53. A total of seven nominations were rejected including three in Mallappally, two in Konni, and one each in Koipuram and Parakode.
For the grama panchayats, 5,936 nomination papers were found valid, while 59 were rejected, leaving 3,286 candidates eligible to contest in the local body elections.
In Kottayam, meanwhile, the authorities have received 6,411 nomination papers. Overall, the district recorded 11,101 sets of nomination papers across all local bodies.
In the district panchayat, 106 candidates filed nominations, while 569 candidates submitted papers for the block panchayats.
The grama panchayats saw 4,920 candidates submit nominations and across the six municipal councils, 816 candidates filed their papers.
