The Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) has launched the Centre for Space Medicine and Research (CSMR) and the Centre for Skills and Simulation Lab (CSSL) at its Biomedical Technology Wing, Poojappura.
The Institute, in collaboration with the Human Space Flight Centre (HSFC) of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Bengaluru, has also launched a new post-doctoral fellowship (PDF) programme in bioastronautics. This is the first time that a bioastronautics course catering to human space medicine is being offered at the SCTIMST.
V. Narayanan, Secretary, Department of Space, inaugurated the facilities and also delivered a guest lecture on “Indian Space Research Organisation: The Milestones and the Future”. Dinesh Kumar Singh, the Director of HSFC, ISRO, was also present.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Narayanan said that the MoU signed between ISRO and SCTIMST was a historic milestone for both institutions.
The newly established lab facilities and the fellowship programme in bioastronautics have been a key outcome of the framework MoU, contributing to India’s Gaganyaan mission.
These initiatives highlight the shared commitment of both institutions to advancing India’s human spaceflight programme through innovative research, simulation-based training and the preparation of future experts in space medicine, it was pointed out.
