The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) on Saturday questioned the contribution of the BJP to the growth of Dakshina Kannada in the last three decades.

SDPI’s Karnataka president Abdul Majeed said in a social media post that the BJP members have been elected to the Lok Sabha for the last 34 years from Dakshina Kannada, even as a majority of the Assembly constituencies are being represented by its cadre since 1991.

Responding to MP for Dakshina Kannada Capt. Brijesh Chowta’s Zero Hour allegation in the Lok Sabha on Friday that the SDPI was the political front of the banned Popular front of India (PFI), Mr. Majeed said the BJP representatives could not bring even one institute of national eminence to the district. Neither an IIT, nor an IIM nor an AIMS was established in the region during the three decades of the BJP rule.

Despite being in power for a long time, the BJP representatives could not bring a government medical college to the district that has a population of more than 23 lakh, Mr. Majeed chided. Neither is there a hi-tech government hospital in the district, nor a satellite branch of the premier heartcare institute, Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences, in the region, he said.

Highway development

Besides failing to bring any major Union government projects to the region, the BJP representatives failed to ensure timely completion of national highway development works, including the Mangaluru-Bengaluru NH 75 between B.C. Road and Addahole, Mangaluru-Solapur NH 169 between Mangaluru and Karkala, and Mangaluru-Tumakuru NH 73 between B.C. Road and Charmadi, the SDPI leader said.

Other than spewing venom against Muslims in the last five decades in the region, the BJP and the Sangh Parivar did nothing for regional development, including promoting tourism, employment, infrastructure, and many more. If Dakshina Kannada has witnessed any development, it was because of its hard working people sweating out in West Asia, Mumbai, and other regions.

Though mammoth development works remain to be executed in the region, Capt. Chowta has levelled false allegations against the SDPI in the Lok Sabha thus wasting a good opportunity to highlight real issues concerning the district, Mr. Majeed alleged.
