The Dakshina Kannada police have booked SDPI State office, Thejasnews.com, and SDPI activist Sadath Bajathur on the charge of spreading false news in the social media on the illegal transportation of cattle.

Early on October 22, a team of the Puttur Rural police stopped a lorry in Nettanigemudnoor village and rescued 12 head of cattle. When an accused tried to attack policemen with a weapon, the police fired at his leg.

A police statement said on Thursday that following the incident, news was spread on social media that the transporters had valid permit to transport the cattle. Receipts about purchase of cattle issued by Channarayapatna APMC were also circulated on social media.

The police checked with the Channarayapatna APMC secretary, who said the receipts circulated on social media were fake. The police also checked with the RTO and the Animal Husbandry Department officials, who said no permit was granted for transporting cattle.

Finding that fake news about the incident was spread on X (erstwhile Twitter) account of the office of SDPI and the Sadath, with an intention to create communal disturbance, the Puttur Rural police booked a case against the State office of the SDPI, Thejasnews.com, and Sadath Bajathur for offences under Sections 233, 240, 338, 353(1)(b), 192, 61(2)(b) and 238 (c) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Superintendent of Police K. Arun cautioned people against posting false information on the social media.

Confiscated

Meanwhile, the Dharmasthala police has confiscated the house and the shed in Sajipanadu village of two accused persons, arrested for illegal transportation of three head of cattle on November 2.

The house of Khaleel alias Tousif in Tanchibettu and shed of Mohammed Sinan were confiscated as they were used for illegal slaughter of cattle. The confiscation was done under Section 8(1) of the Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Cattle Preservation Act 2020, the police said.
