The Congress is facing internal turmoil in Wadakkanchery municipality after the party allotted a council seat to a District Congress Committee (DCC) secretary, prompting several local leaders, including the sitting councillor, to resign from the party.
DCC secretary N. R. Satheesh has been announced as the official Congress candidate in the Puthuruthy division 2. Incumbent councillor Bijeesh Bhaskaran expressed strong dissatisfaction with the decision and submitted his resignation to the DCC president.
Former mandalam president P. M. Prafulla Chandran and his son, Gireesh Chand, mandalam president, also resigned from the party citing the same grievance. Mr. Chand has announced that he will contest as an Independent candidate.
The major complaint raised by the dissidents is that the DCC secretary is not a permanent resident of the Puthuruthy division. However, the Congress leaders countered this claim, stating that Mr. Satheesh has long-standing roots and political involvement in the area.
Mr. Satheesh has been active in local politics for decades, with his family home located in Puthuruthy. He previously served twice as a member of the Mundathikode panchayat from the same region.
“I am contesting as the Congress candidate based on the party’s directive and in the larger public interest,” Mr. Satheesh said, responding to the allegations.
