Senior BJP leader Prem Kumar is set to become the new Speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly as he filed his nomination papers on Monday (December 1, 2025), the opening day of the 18th Assembly.

Mr. Kumar, a nine-term MLA from the Gaya Town constituency and a former Minister in several Nitish Kumar governments, is expected to get elected unopposed since no other candidate has filed nomination papers for the post. The name of the new Speaker will be announced on Tuesday.

The newly elected MLAs, barring six, were administered the oath of office in the 243-member Bihar Assembly on Monday by Pro-tem Speaker Narendra Narayan Yadav.

The MLAs took oath in Hindi, English, Urdu, Sanskrit and Maithili. Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, who also holds the Home portfolio and won the Assembly election from the Tarapur constituency in Jamui district, was the first to take oath on Monday. He was followed by another Deputy Chief Minister, Vijay Kumar Sinha, who retained his Lakhisarai seat for the fourth consecutive term. The youngest MLA in the House, Maithili Thakur, who won from the Alinagar constituency in Darbhanga district, took her oath in Maithili while wearing a colourful paag (traditional headgear).

“Those who could not take oath on Monday will be sworn in on Tuesday after election of the Speaker,” Khyati Singh, Secretary In-Charge of the State Assembly, told media persons.

Governor Arif Mohammed Khan will address a joint session of the Assembly on Wednesday. The second supplementary budget is also scheduled to be tabled that day. The five-day session will conclude on Friday.
