The Karur police on Tuesday arrested seven persons, who snatched away 10 sovereigns of gold ornaments and a mobile phone from an elderly man at Muthanur near here.
According to sources, the gang travelling in a vehicle, waylaid S. Karunanidhi, 67, of Namakkal at Muthanur, when he was returning to Noyyal from Velayuthampalayam, on Saturday and snatched away the gold ornaments by threatening him with a knife. Acting on a complaint, a team led by Abdul Gafoor, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Karur rural, conducted an inquiry with various persons based on the recordings of closed circuit televisions and subsequently arrested all members of the gang.
R. Boominathan, 46, of Ernavur in Chennai, S. Sivakumar, 25, of Manmangalam, R. Silambarasan of Paramathi Velur and M. Sathiyaraj, 31, of Pothanur in Namakkal district were among those arrested. The police recovered 10 sovereigns of gold ornaments, a phone and a vehicle used for committing the crime were seized. They arrested the accused within 48 hours of the crime. Â
