A severed body of a newborn was found on roadside along Kalapatti – Veeriyampalayam road near Coimbatore on Thursday, prompting the police to launch an investigation.

The corpse, gender of which could not be identified, was found with its lower limbs severed below the waist.

According to the police, a passerby noticed the corpse on the roadside and alerted the police control room and the Kovilpalayam station around 2.50 p.m. Police personnel rushed to the spot and found the corpse of a baby, believed to have been born two to four hours before.

As per preliminary examination by the police, the lower portion of the corpse could have got severed by stray dogs. Village Administrative Officer, Kalapatti, and officials from the Child Helpline inspected the scene of crime. The police cordoned off the spot and launched an investigation to trace the parents of the newborn.

Coimbatore District Superintendent of Police K. Karthikeyan told The Hindu that the corpse of the newborn had its umbilical cord. The body was shifted to a government hospital, where the post-mortem examination will be held on Friday.

“The police are checking visuals from road-facing surveillance cameras in the locality to trace the person/s, who abandoned the newborn. Two special teams have been tasked for the investigation,” he said.
