Demanding stern action against illegal transportation of cattle, the district unit of the Shiv Sena, along with religious leaders, staged a ‘rasta roko’ and formed a human chain at Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel Chowk in Kalaburagi on Saturday.
The protest was led by Siddalinga Swami, State president of the Shiv Sena, in response to the recent incident on Wednesday, where gau rakshaks were allegedly attacked when they questioned the illegal transport of cattle to a slaughterhouse.
Mr. Swami, condemning the brutal attack, alleged that the law and order in the district had weakened. He added that departments responsible for preventing illegal activities were failing in their duties, allowing such incidents to continue.
Urging the government to take strict action against culprits, the protesters and religious heads demanded the immediate arrest of all those involved in the assault and to establish proper check-points by installing CCTV cameras to stop illegal cattle transport.
Mr. Swami also sought action against police, RTO, APMC and veterinary department officials who had failed to take steps to curb illegal transportation of cattle. He also insisted that all illegal slaughterhouses operating in the district be closed down.
The agitators warned that if the government failed to respond to their demands immediately, the Shiv Sena members would intensify the agitation.
