The Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Authority (PPV&FRA), honoured Ananthamurthy Javali, a farmer from Ripponpet in Hosanagara taluk of Shivamogga district, with a national award for the year 2022-23 for the conservation and propagation of plant species, in New Delhi on Wednesday, November 12.
Union Minister for Agriculture Shivraj Singh Chouhan presented the Plant Genome Saviour Farmer Recognition award to Mr. Javali and Nagarajappa Adiveppar, professor of Keladi Shivappa Nayaka University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences. Dr. Nagarajappa served as a facilitator for the compilation and submission of the application for the award. The award carries a citation and a cash prize of ₹1 lakh.
Mr. Javali, who owns a farm at Baruve village near Ripponpet, has conserved and propagated plant species including Appemidi mango, jackfruit, medicinal plants, and other rare fruit species. He got the PPV&FRA recognition for the Haladi Rudrakshi variety of jackfruit grown on his farm and received the certificate from the authority in 2024.
