The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has recommended the Tamil Nadu government to pay a compensation of ₹5 lakh to a man from Pollachi who was assaulted by police personnel at the Mahalingapuram police station in Coimbatore district in 2020, for flagging misappropriation in a local ration shop.
SHRC member V. Kannadasan recommended a sum of ₹2 lakh be recovered each from Sub-Inspector C. Sivakumar and head constable M. Jagadeesh Prabu and a sum of ₹50,000 be recovered each from police constables M. Ananthan and K. Selvaganesh. The Commission also recommended for initiating disciplinary proceedings against them, as per the rules.
According to a complaint by J. Krishnakumar, he flagged misappropriation in a ration shop. The police personnel colluded with the main accused and filed a false complaint against him and further assaulted him in the police station. The respondent police personnel rejected the charges levelled against them.
Considering the oral and documentary evidence of the parties and also the written arguments filed by them, the Commission said that the respondents assaulted the complainant and caused injuries to him. It further said the action of the respondents amounted to violation of human rights of the complainant.
