Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu’s wife, Navjot Kaur Sidhu, was suspended from the party on Monday (December 8, 2025) after she sparked a controversy by declaring that anyone with “₹500 crore” could become the Chief Minister. Mr. Sidhu is a former cricketer.
Last week, while speaking to the media in Chandigarh, Ms. Sidhu, a former MLA, had said, “Mr. Navjot Singh Sidhu will return to active politics only if the Congress party declares him the Chief Ministerial face in Punjab and that they had always stood for Punjabiyat.” She then added that “Whoever offers ₹500 crore in a suit case could become the Chief Minister.”

A suspension order from the Punjab State Congress Committee, signed by its president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, was issued on December 8 without mentioning a reason.
“Dr. Navjot Kaur Sidhu is hereby suspended from the primary membership of the party with immediate effect,” the order said.
Soon after, political parties, including the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), sought answers from the Congress. BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh stated that Ms. Navjot Kaur’s remark has exposed the Congress’s “money bags” politics. AAP’s Punjab general secretary Baltej Pannu said the remark was “deeply disturbing,” and sought an answer from the Congress.
