Signboards with names of villages written in Hindi installed along the roadside on the outskirts of Thanjavur town were found smudged with black paint on Tuesday.

The signboards, displaying the names of villages in Tamil, English and Hindi, were installed recently. The names written in Hindi were found blackened in at least three places, one indicating the direction to Vallam Junction and those at Melavasthasavadi and Thirukkanoorpatti.

On Monday, a group of persons and members of Makkal Nala Peravai, submitted a memorandum to the district administration, seeking removal of signboards carrying Hindi words along with Tamil and English installed at some of the villages on the outskirts of Thanjavur town.

In the memorandum, they said names in Tamil, English and Hindi language were displayed only at villages having railway stations. But recently, signboards had appeared at places such as Vallam, Melavasthachavadi, Thirukkanurpatti, Maappillainaicken Patti, Arputhapuram, Manjapettai and other hamlets located along the roads.

It was an act of imposition of Hindi on non-Hindi speaking people, they said and urged the district administration to remove the signboards installed along the roadsides at hamlets located on the outskirts of Thanjavur town.
