The Special Intensive Revision of electoral roll being taken-out in 12 States and the Union Territories is nothing but the BJP’s attempt to murder Indian democracy with the help of the Election Commission of India, Member of Parliament Kanimozhi has charged.
Speaking to reporters here on Friday after inaugurating a de-addiction centre at Muthaiahpuram, Ms. Kanimozhi said SIR, which should have been implemented after giving due time for all the stakeholders, was being forcibly pushed through ahead of the Assembly polls of a few States in a hasty fashion. After the nation witnessed the ‘effect’ of SIR in Maharashtra and Haryana, it has been tested again in Bihar where the voting right of a few lakh voters had been stolen for favouring the BJP.
“Now, the SIR, in its dubious shape, is to be rolled-out in Tamil Nadu also by the BJP with the help of the Election Commission of India. It is an attempt to massacre India’s democracy and hence the DMK and its allies are resisting this attempt vehemently through every possible means,” Ms. Kanimozhi said.
When asked about the recent gang rape in Coimbatore, the MP said any crime against women and the children should be condemned unequivocally and should not be tolerated. Hence Chief Minister M.K. Stalin took immediate and appropriate action against the suspects. The officials had been instructed to expedite the investigation and trial of this case to ensure early justice to the victim, she noted.
Minister for Social Welfare P. Geetha Jeevan, District Collector K. Elambahavath, Mayor Jegan Periyasamy, Corporation Commissioner C. Priyanka and others were present.
The de-addiction centre has been created at JS Nagar in Muthaiahpuram by the Corporation at the cost of ₹2.38 crore and sponsored by the VOC Port under its Corporate Social Responsibility programme. The MP also inaugurated the additional classroom buildings built at JS Nagar Corporation Primary School on an outlay of ₹55 lakh and additional classroom buildings and compound wall built around Vidhya Prakasam Special School at Muthammal Colony.
