Sivaganga district police arrested seven people in connection with a robbery incident where a mother and son were tied up inside their home and jewellery was stolen.
Police said, Murugappan, 40, a resident of Kalaiyarmangalam near Sivaganga, owned a grocery store in the same area.
Early in the morning on November 19, when Murugappan came out of the house, six masked men who were hiding nearby grabbed the man, gagged him and dragged him inside the house, and tied up his limbs. They also tied up his mother thus preventing the victims from raising any alarm,
The robbers then threatened them with a knife and stole five sovereigns of jewellery, a mobile phone, and ₹2,000 cash before escaping. The Madagupatti Police registered a case regarding the incident.
Based on the orders of Superintendent of Police R. Shiva Prasad, three special teams were formed to investigate the robbery.
During the robbery, one of the thieves had spoken on a mobile phone with Saranraj, 23, of T. Pudur, Sivaganga, who was standing outside the house.
Based on the piece of information, the special team police apprehended and interrogated Saranraj, and through him, it was revealed that a total of seven people were involved in the heist.
Furthermore, it was discovered that they were involved in 10 more theft incidents: five in the Kalaiyarkovil area, two in the Sivaganga taluk area, and three in the Madagupatti area.
Following this, police arrested seven individuals: Saranraj, Santhanamuthu of Surakkulam, Sivabalamurugan alias Mundass of Padamathur, Karthick, 28, alias Umpire of Thondi Road, Madhanraj, 20, of T. Pudur, Lalluprasad, 18, of Nehru Bazaar, Ajith alias Kodi of Kollangudi and Kathir.
Police also seized 28.6 grams of gold, 500 grams of silver, 300 kg brass items, a laptop, a mobile phone, a music keyboard, four speakers, a car, a two-wheeler, and swords used in the thefts. Further investigation is under way to nab three more individuals involved in the thefts.
