Sivakasi woman, her father arrested for cheating businessman

Virudhunagar District Crime Branch police have arrested a woman, Sudha, 37, and her father, Venkataramanujam, 72, on charges of impersonation and cheating a businessman from Sivakasi to the tune of ₹ 55.42 lakh, on Friday.

According to DCB sources, the victim, Kannan, 51, of Sivakasi, was running a printing press and granite quarry. Sankaranarayanan, who was working as an engineer with him, had introduced Sudha to Kannan, claiming her to be the district coordinator in District Rural Development Agency in January.

He also said that the woman would soon be promoted as Block Development Officer.

Meanwhile, the woman had gone to Kannan’s quarry claiming to buy granite slabs for her new house under construction.

The woman lured Kannan with the hope of getting him a road contract through DRDA.

She also promised him of getting permission from Virudhunagar Collectorate for his proposal to establish an old age home.

Falling for her words, Kannan had started to pay her money in different instalments till July.

However, as the woman could not fulfil her promises, he grew suspicious and finally found out that she was not employed with the Government department.

But, by then, he had given her ₹55.42 lakh.

Based on his complaint, the DCB team, led by its Inspector, Sylvia Jasmine, and Sub-Inspector of Police, C. Logidasan, arrested the father-daughter duo. They are on the lookout for two more accused Beema Begam and Sankaranarayanan.
