The grand finale of the Smart India Hackathon (SIH) 2025, a nation-wide two-day event, began in Coimbatore on Monday at Sri Krishna College of Engineering and Technology (SKCET).
Smart India Hackathon is an initiative of the Central government to address challenges faced by government departments and private organisations through solutions developed by students.
The event was inaugurated by S. Malarvizhi, chairperson and managing trustee of Sri Krishna Institutions, along with K. V. Karthik, president of the Indian Pump Manufacturers Association and managing director of Deccan Industries, Coimbatore.
Twenty teams with 108 participants from institutions across the country are working on four problem statements issued by the Ministry of Jal Shakti.
Addressing the participants, Mr. Karthik said the problem statements demand solutions that move beyond routine engineering approaches. He urged the teams to work on ideas that can be deployed on the ground, especially in regions facing pressure on drinking water sources. He said the hackathon offers scope to design systems that reduce losses in distribution, improve monitoring of water quality and support long-term planning for water use, all of which are linked to India’s development targets under Viksit Bharat 2047.
Winners of the competition will receive a prize of ₹1.5 lakh.
