A special veterinary hospital to treat injured wild animals is functional at Kurumbapatti Zoological Park at the Yercaud foothills in the district.

The 76-acre park that houses 254 mammals, reptiles, and birds is getting upgraded into a medium-category zoological park and works are on to accommodate wild animals such as tiger and bear. The Forest Department decided to construct a special veterinary hospital inside the park at a cost of ₹70 lakh to treat these animals, when the need arises. Construction works that began in January were completed recently and the hospital has a doctor’s room, medical room, operation theatre, and scan room.

Forest Department officials said that a doctor was appointed and he has started treating the animals at the park. The hospital will function as the main facility to treat animals brought from Salem, Attur, and Namakkal forest divisions. Hereafter, there is no need to bring veterinary doctors from Coimbatore or Hosur in case of emergency, the officials added.
