A Sri Lankan Tamil, who illegally travelled from Sri Lanka by sea in a country boat and arrived in Rameswaram, was arrested by the police here on Saturday.
Police said, Kannan, 34, a native of Jaffna, had illegally travelled on the night of November 6, from Jaffna, Sri Lanka, in a fiberglass boat and landed at Vedaranyam in Nagapattinam district.
He then took a bus from Vedaranyam to Rameswaram bus stand intending to go to the Mandapam Sri Lankan Refugee Rehabilitation Camp to meet his wife who resides there.
The Q branch police headed by Inspector Janaki, who received information about the illegal entry of a foreign national and was alerted about his visit to Mandapam Sri Lankan Refugee Rehabilitation Camp, deployed police at the Rameswaram bus stand area.
As the police team identified an individual, who was sitting suspiciously in a nearby park, they detained him for interrogation. During investigation, he was found to be in possession of Sri Lankan currency, a Sri Lankan passport, and a Sri Lankan government ID card.
The Q Branch Police subsequently handed Kannan over to the Rameswaram Town Police Station. The police registered a case against Kannan for illegal infiltration into Tamil Nadu without a passport and produced him before the Judicial Magistrate Court in Paramakudi.
The Judicial Magistrate ordered him to be lodged in the Puzhal Central Prison, Chennai, till November 21, 2025. Following the order, the police took him to Puzhal Central Prison.
Police sources said, Kannan who was also in Mandapam Sri Lankan Refugee Rehabilitation Camp returned to Sri Lanka legally few years ago. His family had remained in the camp.
