Stagnant rainwater and sewage overflowing from clogged underground drainage system are making life miserable for residents in a few parts of this port town after recent rains.
After the recent rains lashed this coastal town on November 22 and 23, water stagnation in several parts of Thoothukudi has been creating problems for the residents for more than three days even as the Corporation workers are busy pumping out the stagnant rainwater at 30 spots in the town. While this intervention has ensured the draining of rainwater in a few places, areas like Shankar Colony, Kamaraj Nagar, Postal and Telegraph Colony, Kathirvel Nagar, Athiparasakthi Nagar, Rahmath Nagar and Sundaravelpuram are still battling the problem.
âDue to the blocks in the underground drainage system, the sewage is also overflowing make things worse along with the stagnant rainwater,â say residents of Shankar Colony.
Following complaints from the Shankar Colony residents, Mayor Jegan Periyasamy visited the area and ordered the officials to de-clog the chocked underground drainage system. He also asked the officials tp instal one more pump to drain the stagnant rainwater and visited Kamaraj Nagar and Terespuram.
Minister for Social Welfare Geetha Jeevan visited Sundaravelpuram area to monitor the pumping out of rainwater.
