Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated the newly built flyover at Melamadai here on Sunday.

The 950-metre-long structure built at a cost of ₹150.28 crore was named after freedom fighter Velu Nachiyar.

The flyover was officially named after the freedom fighter in honour of the warrior queen who is celebrated for defying British rule and reclaiming Sivaganga, according to a press statement.

The stretch connecting the Anna Bus Stand and Melamadai junction to the Ring Road which was closed for more than six months for the construction of the flyover would provide a relief to the commuters using the particular stretch of road.

Mr. Stalin amidst the events, inspected and reviewed the development works being carried out at Panthalgudi canal at a cost of ₹69.21 crore.

The works included: construction of flood protection sidewalls on both banks of the canal; conversion of the earthen base to a concrete base to enhance the water flow capacity of the canal; installation of a wire fence, approximately two metres high, on top of the sidewalls to prevent the dumping the garbage and other waste into the canal; reconstruction of three existing small bridges which were in a dilapidated condition.

He instructed the officials to complete all the works expeditiously.
