The State Highways Department (NH wing) has submitted a proposal to the Union government to widen the Uppilipalayam flyover in Coimbatore city.

The plan is to widen the circular two-lane road in the flyover that is connected to five ramps.

An official of the Department said the circular road will be widened into a three lane one and the curve that leads to the ramp towards Goodshed Road will be smoothened so that vehicles can turn to the ramp easily.

There is no plan to acquire land for this project and the widening work is expected to cost ₹13 crore. “We hope to get an approval for the project from the Centre in a couple of weeks and proceed with the work at the earliest,” the official said.

According to K. Kathirmathiyon, secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause, the project was mooted last year and the design is finalised now. The Centre should approve the project at the earliest as it will help ease traffic congestion on the flyover. The Highways Department should also look at using the space available at the ground level of the flyover so that more vehicles can avoid the flyover and use the underpass, he added.
