Thoothukudi police have stepped up measures to curb rising traffic violations across the city, with a special focus on underage driving, vehicles without number plates, triple riding and the use of modified and alternative silencers in the two-wheelers.

According to police sources, several checkpoints have been set up at key locations, including Third Mile, KVK Nagar, Miller Puram, etc,. and continuous monitoring is being carried out by the traffic wing. In the past 10 days, around 400 cases have been registered against individuals involved in these offences.

Acting on the directives of Thoothukudi Superintendent of Police Albert John, a traffic enforcement drive has been strengthened across major junctions, ensuring strict action against individuals flouting these rules.

An official from the Thoothukudi city traffic wing said that apart from the regular inspection, the traffic police department has now intensified the crackdown, significantly due to the surge in triple riding and underage driving.

He said that, in case of underage driving, several cases have been registered against the parents, and they were advised not to permit their minor children to handle two wheelers.

“Due to the intensive drive, the triple riding in the city has reduced by nearly 50% in the city” he noted.

The official further noted that two wheelers without number plates were frequently used in crimes such as chain snatching and other thefts. The department is paying heightened attention to tracking such vehicles with the aim of preventing criminal activities.

He added, “Earlier we used to issue only fine receipts. However, now we insist that individuals pay the fine amount on the spot, even if it takes the whole day and vehicles are released only after payment. This has helped drastically reduce traffic violations in the city.”
