A court in Sullia has sentenced three persons to three years in jail after finding them guilty of cheating people of electronic items by collecting money in the form of an investment scheme.

As per the charge sheet, Shri Tatvamasi Charitable Trust and Shri Tatvamasi Enterprises Limited jointly opened an electronics shop in Gandhi Nagar, Sullia, in 2013. They started a ‘benefit scheme’ under which agents collected a total of ₹3.08 crore from 4,115 persons via a weekly instalment of ₹150 by promising electronic goods at the end of 50 weeks of investment. The Sullia police charged six persons, who managed the shop, and two persons, who worked as agents, with cheating as they failed to deliver electronic goods to investors.

Senior Civil Judge and Judicial Magistrate of First Class B. Mohan Babu on Monday sentenced K.P. Ganesh, K.S. Geeta and Bharati, who owned the shop, to three years of simple imprisonment upon finding them guilty of offences under Sections 406 and 149 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). They were also sentenced to three years in jail for offences under Sections 409 and 420 of the IPC, and slapped with a penalty of ₹10,000. If they fail to pay the fine, they have to undergo six months of further simple imprisonment. All sentences will run concurrently, the Judge stated in his order.

The Judge acquitted other accused K.P. Krishnappa Gowda, Geeta Ganesh, N.E.Y. Kamalaksha, and E. Ganesh. As the first accused Shivaprakash was dead, the case against him stands abated, Mr. Babu stated.
