An SUV was gutted and their occupants escaped narrowly after it rammed a milk tanker on the Bengaluru–Mysuru access controlled highway near Sangabasavanadoddi in Bengaluru South district on Sunday morning.
The accident triggered a massive traffic jam on the busy corridor.
According to the police, the vehicle, carrying a family of three to Bengaluru, attempted to overtake the tanker from the left and crashed into it.
The impact sparked a fire in the engine, and the vehicle was engulfed in flames within minutes.
All three occupants managed to jump out in time and escaped with minor injuries.
Passers-by and highway patrol personnel shifted them to a nearby private hospital.
The burning car brought traffic to a halt for several kilometres.
Fire and Emergency Services personnel doused the blaze and cleared the charred vehicle, after which traffic was restored around 5.30 p.m., the police said.
Preliminary reports suggest speeding and a risky overtaking attempt may have caused the accident. The Bengaluru South district traffic police are investigating the exact cause.
