The State government has been seeking approval for six more government medical colleges, including in the newly formed districts of Perambalur, Tenkasi, Ranipet, Tirupattur and Mayiladuthurai, Health Minister Ma. Subramanian said on Saturday.

He said that the Chief Minister has been continuously urging the Prime Minister and Union Health Minister to sanction the medical colleges. The Centre has assured to give the nod, he told reporters at the “Nalam Kaakum Stalin” camp held in Chennai.

Responding to a question on why no new medical colleges have come up during the DMK regime as opposed to 11 during the AIADMK rule, he said the 11 new colleges were started during their (AIADMK) tenure, but it should be noted that the construction works of these colleges were completed, full financial support was provided, and brought into use only after the present government assumed office.
